Lister Guidance

Step 1: listing your bike on Spinlister...

Follow Spinlister's step by step guide for #WheelsForHeroes listings.

Remember, you rental is covered by $5000 of insurance for loss/damage.

Step 2: Prepare your bike for loan.

Check your bike is working (tyres pumped, brakes work, gears work):

  • Pump your tyres - Pinch the side of your tyres and ensure they’re firm. Check the side of your tyre for proper pressure. For a Brompton, inflate to 100 psi.
  • Take a test ride - Squeeze brake levers to ensure the bike stops, shift gears to ensure they work. Make sure nothing is loose or broken. If needed, lubricate the chain.
  • Get it fixed – If anything is broken or not working fully, please get your bike tuned up by a mechanic before sending it out. Call ahead to a bicycle store near you and ensure they're open and  can schedule the work for you. *Servicing costs not covered by Brompton or Spinlister

Step 3: Prepare for a healthcare worker to collect your bike.

Take these additional precautions to ensure your bike is disinfected and sanitary.

Wipe down your bike to sanitise it, cleaning all touch points: seat, handlebar & frame - with special attention to the handlebar grips. We recommend using an alcohol wipe or a cleaning spray. As with washing your hands, do this thoroughly to ensure the bike is sanitised fully.

Step 4: Arrange a contactless pickup.

  1. Coordinate pickup time with the healthcare worker via Spinlister.
  2. Carry your bike outside your home or to the agreed drop off point, being careful to remember where you’ve touched it.
  3. Wipe down any spots you’ve touched.
  4. Step back from the bike and remain 6 ft / 2m away during the pickup.
  5. Always practice safe social distancing.

Healthcare worker guidance

Step 1: Get verified as a Healthcare worker

Please go to https://wheelsforheroes.org/get-a-bike which will guide you through the process if you are located in New York City or the UK - unfortunately we are only running the campaign in these locations currently. For the UK, in order to verify as an NHS worker, you will need to use your NHS email address or ID proof during the verification purposes.

FAQ - I don’t work for the NHS but I am a care / key worker in the UK – can I still be verified

Unfortunately we are only able to verify NHS workers currently for this programme. Alternatively, please visit this Sustrans webpage - https://www.sustrans.org.uk/campaigns/cycles-for-key-workers/ which has amalgamated cycling offers and services for key workers in the UK during COVID-19.

Step 2: Find a bike

Once you are verified, you will receive email instructions to find #WheelsForHeroes bikes on Spinlister

Step 3: Pick up your bike

  • Coordinate a pickup time via Spinlister
  • If you're picking up a Brompton, watch our how-to fold & unfold videos ahead of time.
  • When you arrive, say hello and confirm who you are to the owner. Practice safe social distancing by remaining 6 ft / 2m apart at all times.
  • The bike owner has been instructed to sanitize their bike to the best of their ability but please wipe down seat, handlebar & frame - with special attention to the grips - just to be sure!
  • Ride safe!

Where is the campaign running?

Currently only in New York City in the USA and across the UK. We hope to be able to expand to other cities and countries in the coming weeks if resource at Spinlister and Brompton allows.

How long will the campaign and rental periods last?

The campaign will run at least until lockdown restrictions are lifted and potentially longer depending on the levels of restrictions and the support of our community whose bikes are listed on the platform.

Listers who are loaning their bike as part of the #WheelsForHeroes initiative to a healthcare worker can provide the loan for as long as they wish – we recommend for at least 3 weeks or 30 days initially, however this is at the discretion of the lister.

What does it cost to list / rent a bike and are bikes insured?

Spinlister provide insurance for listed bikes up to $5,000. A credit check of $1 is charged to Healthcare workers and there are no other hire or list costs as part of the #WheelsForHeroes initiative.
